Dr. Oleksandr Buchnev is currently a Senior Research Fellow in the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton. He was awarded an MSc with honours in 1999 from Zhytomyr State University (Zhytomyr, Ukraine) in Physics and joined the Physics department as a tutor assistant at this University. His PhD in Soft Matter Physics was received from the Institute of Physics in Kiev, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 2007. Oleksandr has more than 10 years of research experience working in the field of liquid crystals and display applications. He has relevant expertise in tailor-made liquid crystal devices and in functionalising liquid crystals with nanoparticles, such as ferroelectric, ferromagnetic and plasmonic inclusions. His expertise also includes optics and electro-optics of liquid crystals, and liquid crystal displays; light-induced effects in liquid crystals; and heterogeneous liquid crystal systems (e.g. PDLCs and filled nematics). During his numerous secondments Dr. Buchnev has worked in the research labs and cleanrooms of LG-Phillips, Hoseo University (South Korea), the University of Colorado (Colorado Springs, USA), the University of Rome "Roma Tre" (Rome, Italy) and the Liquid Crystal Institute (Ohio, USA). He is currently involved in a project devoted to the development of liquid-crystal-loaded active photonic metamaterials.
